Ivory Soap Bar Experiment

by Angela Thayer Leave a Comment

Here’s an experiment that will really WOW your child! I’ve seen this activity around, but we had never tried it, so I figured it was time!

Here’s what you need:

  • Ivory soap bar (needs to be Ivory!)
  • microwave
  • bowl or plate

For this activity, place soap bar in the microwave on a microwavable container.

Then just microwave for 2 minutes. I asked my kids to predict what would happen. They both thought it would melt. Oh and make sure you watch while you microwave!

As you can see, the ivory soap expands by a lot! It makes a huge puffy mound! It was fun to watch my children’s reaction to this experiment.

After we explored and touched the cooled-down ivory soap, we wanted to see what would happen if we sprayed water on it.

We saw it break into flakes. Then it started getting foamy!

Then we washed some cars. 🙂

We also tried this experiment in a different way. We wanted to see what would happen if we put food coloring on the ivory soap bar before we microwaved it. This is how it turned out! It was swirled with colors!

This experiment was easy, inexpensive, and fun! I hope you’ll try it out!
