The first day of school is almost here! And if you’re a last-minute planner like me, maybe it’s already today. Either way, I’ve got you covered with a FREE (and super cute!) first day of school sign to print.

Importance of First Day Signs

Back to school time is exciting, but also so busy! A new school year means it’s time to take a photo for the memory books! I know the kids might moan and groan (especially the older they get!) but you will love looking back at these photos! Here’s why I think first day signs are important:

• shows memories of the first day
• it’s a cherished family tradition
• you can take a last day picture and see your child’s growth
• it captures how your child changes over the years

Ideas for First Day Signs

Like I said above, I totally understand if you’ve procrastinated and you need this printable TODAY! Before the kids head off to school, snap a quick photo of them holding the sign! (Also to be honest, I’ve also done this after school if the first morning is too hectic!)

I don’t want capturing the perfect photo of your child with their first day of school sign to be stressful, so here are some photo tips to help you capture memorable and meaningful images:

1. Take photos outside! I usually do this by my planters so you can see my flowers. Taking photos outside with natural light helps with the photo quality!
2. Make sure the sign is clear and readable. You’ll want them to just hold the sides of the printable. If it’s easier, you can place the printable in a frame!
3. Experiment with different angles. Usually most photos are taken with the child holding the sign in front of them at chest level, but you can also try overhead shots or close-ups focusing on the sign itself.
4. Add in some items related to school, such as a backpack, lunchbox, or favorite school supplies. These can add context and show off your child’s personality.
5. If your child has siblings, make sure to snap a photo with them together!
