Easter Egg Beginning Sound Puzzles
Making phonics FUN with these Easter Egg Beginning Sound Puzzles! This activity is a great way to practice letter and sound identification while celebrating spring and Easter! Your preschool and kindergarten students will enjoy matching the puzzle pieces to make egg matches!
Beginning Sounds
Teaching beginning sounds for phonics is exciting because it’s a step towards learning to read! I like to start with simple activities such as identifying objects that begin with the same sound, making an alphabet sound box, and playing matching games.
It is crucial for students’ early literacy development to learn beginning sounds in words. This will help children recognize and understand the relationship between letters and their corresponding sounds. When students master this foundational skill, this will help them with decoding words to help them read and also spelling words to help them write.
This Easter egg literacy game is great for learning to listen to beginning sounds in words and matching them to the uppercase or lowercase letter.
Materials Needed
You only need a few supplies for this activity.
- card stock paper
- laminator (this is optional, but will make the pieces more durable)
- scissors
- printable (found at the bottom of this post)
Activity Instructions
The goal of this activity is to match the puzzle pieces together so that the alphabet letter is matched with the pictures with that beginning sound.
- Print the pages onto card stock paper. There are uppercase and lowercase pages, both in black and white and color. Choose the pages you’d like to print.
- Laminate the pages for durability.
- Cut the egg pieces apart.
- Mix up the pieces and lay them on the floor or table.
- Have the students put together the egg puzzles. For example, if the student chose a piece with letter A on the egg, they would look for the pieces with pictures of an apple and acorn. Make sure to reinforce that it starts with the /a/ sound.
Variations
As educators, we know that students are on different levels for learning and we need to adapt activities to make them easier or harder for students.
Ideas to Make it Easier
Here are some ideas to make this activity less overwhelming.
- Only use 5 eggs at a time. If you use all 26 eggs, that can be very overwhelming for students struggling with learning beginning sounds.
- Do this activity in pairs or small groups. If you do pairs, try to to pair students together so that a stronger student can help a struggling one.
Ideas to Make it Harder
Here are some ideas to make this activity more challenging.
- Set a timer and see how quickly students can match the eggs.
- When a child makes a match, have them say a rhyming word for each of the pictures. It can be a nonsene word! Ex: Letter F – fork/pork
- Play this as a matching game. Use the black and white version and spread all the pieces out on the table face down. Take turns choosing two pieces. If they are a match, keep them. If not, flip them back over. Whoever has the most matches at the end is the winner.
