Beginning Blends Flip Books
Learning to decode blends is an important step in learning to read. A blend is two consonants put together to make one sound. With blends, both letters keep their sound. For example, if you say the word drink you can clearly hear the beginning sounds of d and r.
Blends can be found at the beginning or end of words. Blending is important because it helps students decode unfamiliar words using letter-sound patterns when reading.
Today I’m sharing a printable to help children practice reading words with beginning blends.
These Beginning Blends Flip Books focus on the following blends:
L Blends:
-bl blends
-cl blends
-fl blends
-gl blends
-pl blends
-sl blends
R Blends:
-br blends
-cr blends
-dr blends
-fr blends
-gr blends
-pr blends
-tr blends
S Blends:
-sc blends
-sk blends
-sl blends
-sm blends
-sn blends
-sp blends
-st blends
-sw blends
These flip books are a great way to help kids practice reading! Kids can create them in the classroom and then bring them home to read to parents or caregivers.
Beginning Blends Flip Books
All you need for these flip books are the following:
- paper
- scissors
- crayons or colored pencils
- stapler
- Begin by printing the page on printer paper. Since you’ll probably be learning just one blend at a time, you will just print one page.
- Have students color the pictures and practice reading the words.
- Cut out the different boxes. You can have the students do this if they are able to.
- Each box has a number on it. Start with number 1 and layer each paper on top of each other. Then put the family name on top.
- Place two staples at the top to complete the flip book.
This free printable is great for parents looking to improve their child’s spelling and reading skills or a classroom teacher looking for an engaging literacy activity!
