Winter Counting Books

by Angela Thayer 3 Comments

Learning to count is a critical skill for preschoolers and kindergarteners to practice. There are many ways hands-on ways to teach little ones to count. In order for children to have a solid number sense, it’s important for them to have many opportunities to practice counting. Today I’m sharing an activity that will help little ones practice counting along with a free printable. These winter counting booklets include practice with numbers 1-20.

The first thing to teach young children is to count to five. Having that foundation of learning 0-5 first is key. Then moving on to 0-10. Once they have a good understanding of those numbers, I recommend teaching numbers 11-20.

Teaching Strategies GOLD states that preschoolers need to know how to count 1-20. The Common Core states that kindergarteners need to know how to write numbers from 0 to 20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20. If you have a student or child having a difficult time with counting, I recommend doing many multi-sensory activities with them. Remember that each child is different and it may take many exposures to numbers for it to click.

I’m sharing a winter counting book that will give your students practice with counting and writing numbers. Each number has its own small booklet. Here’s an example of what it looks like.

I’m excited to share this printable resource for free! All you have to do is click the words below to download it. The instructions are also included in this PDF.

I love this printable! It’s perfect for continuing practice of making sets of numbers! I’d love a laminator to keep at school, it would be helpful for those last minute moments when you realize you dint get all your laminating done:)
