Thanksgiving Write the Room Activity
If you’re looking for a fun, hands-on literacy activity for November, you’ll love this Thanksgiving Write the Room! It’s an engaging way to get your students moving, reading, and writing…all while celebrating the Thanksgiving season.

What Is “Write the Room”?
“Write the Room” is a simple yet powerful activity that gets children up and moving while they practice early literacy skills. Instead of sitting at their desks, students walk around the classroom and find picture cards posted there. Each card features a themed image and a vocabulary word. As they find each one, they record the words on their recording sheet.
It’s a great way to incorporate movement into learning! We all know that children like to move (and can get fidgety when sitting for too long), so this is a kinesthetic approach that helps students stay focused, improve word recognition, and build writing confidence.
What’s Included
This Thanksgiving-themed printable includes:
- 12 colorful picture cards with Thanksgiving words
- A recording sheet with numbered boxes that match the picture cards.

Activity Directions
- Print and cut the Thanksgiving cards.
- Hang the cards around your classroom. You could put them on walls, doors, bookshelves, or furniture at your students’ eye level.
- Hand each student a recording sheet and a pencil or clipboard.
- Invite students to walk around the room and find each numbered card.
- When they find a card, they write the word from that card in the matching box on their sheet.
It’s that simple! You can do it as a whole-class activity, in small groups, or even as a literacy center.
Educational Benefits
I love this activity because it’s an amazing way to…
- Encourage movement and engagement during literacy time.
- Boost word recognition and spelling skills.
- Strengthen handwriting practice in a fun, low-pressure way.
- Support visual scanning and focus — key pre-reading skills!
Differentiation Ideas
- For beginners, you can write the words lightly in pencil on the recording sheet so they can trace them.
- For advanced learners, ask them to use the word in a sentence or write rhyming words afterward.
Another idea is to laminate the cards and recording sheet for reuse year after year!

This Thanksgiving Write the Room activity is a fun way to incorporate literacy and movement into your classroom! I promise… your students will love this activity, and you’ll love how engaged they are! 🧡
