Sight Word Practice Cards – 3rd Grade

by Angela Thayer Leave a Comment

This post has been a long time coming! Thank you to those who have patiently waited for me to create the Sight Word Practice Cards for 3rd Grade Dolch words. If your students are working on 3rd grade sight words, these practice cards are a must! They help kids learn to read words with automaticity, spell sight words, and read the word in a sentence.

Sight words are words that are frequently used in text and words that can’t necessarily be sounded out, so they need to be memorized. For example, if you sound out the word ‘eight’ it would sound different than how it should be pronounced.

To help with reading fluency and sight word recognition, you can use these cards in small groups, working with individuals one-on-one, or send home with students to practice at home.

On the cards, there are three steps:

  1. Read the word
  2. Write the word
  3. Read the word in a sentence

There is a picture on each card, which may give some clues to the child to help them read the sentence.

I recommend laminating the cards and using a dry erase marker so you can reuse the cards in the future. If your child has trouble reading the word, that’s ok! With time, practice, and repetition, they will start to read the words. Reading sight words is just one component of learning to read. It also takes practice with phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, and print awareness.
