Honey Playdough

by Angela Thayer 5 Comments

We have been doing a few activities on bees this week. Bees and honey go hand-in-hand, so I decided to create a sensory experience using honey. I tried creating various recipes, but the best one was honey playdough. It is soft, smells good, and my kids played with it for a long time.

Honey Playdough -- An easy, no-cook recipe!

This recipe is super easy and you do not have to cook it! Here is what you need for the recipe:

  • 2 – 1/2 cups flour (plus 1/4 cup for later)
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 – 1/2 cups of boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Start by mixing the dry ingredients. Then mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry, while stirring. If the mixture looks too wet, add in the extra 1/4 cup of flour. Then knead the dough on a cutting board with flour. It may start out looking something like this…

Honey Playdough Keep kneading the dough until it is soft and easy to mold with your hands. If it seems too dry, you can add a teaspoon or two of oil and knead it in. Then have fun with the dough! (When you are done with the dough, store it in an air-tight container so you can use it for months!)

Here is how my boys played with it…

Letting your child explore and have fun with the playdough is great! If you want to incorporate some fine motor activities, you can try these ideas with honey playdough:

  • roll into playdough snakes
  • use kid scissors to cut the snakes or pieces
  • make pretend cupcakes
  • make balls
  • roll out the dough with a small roller
  • make imprints with a honey dipper (these mini ones are from Hobby Lobby)
  • make a playdough beehive

Hope you will try out this playdough recipe!! My boys played with this playdough for a very long time and we will be bringing it out again soon!

Oh no! I just re-tried it. You are right! It’s missing 1/2 cup of flour. I am SO so sorry about this! I just adjusted the recipe.
