Shape Scarecrow Craftivity
Looking for a fun and engaging way to spark your students’ creativity this autumn? This shape-based scarecrow craft is the perfect fall activity! Not only does it align with a harvest theme, but it also helps students practice identifying shapes while creating their own scarecrow.
Do you know what a craftivity is? A craftivity is a combination of a craft and an activity and it usually involves a creative, hands-on project that also serves an educational purpose. Kids love these and I know they will love creating a scarecrow with 2D shapes!
Shape Scarecrow Materials
To make this craftivity, you’ll need the following:
- free printable (at the bottom of this post)
- card stock paper
- crayons or colored pencils: yellow, orange, green, and brown
- glue stick
- writing utensil
Steps to Making the Scarecrow
To prep this activity, you’ll need to print 2 pages for each student. Make sure you print the pages on card stock paper so they are sturdy.
The first page is where your student will make their scarecrow using shapes. They will also count the shapes and fill in the boxes at the bottom of the page.
The second page has the shape pieces. Have your students follow the directions for coloring each set of shapes. You’ll need 4 colors: yellow, brown, orange, and green.
They don’t have to color inside the lines since they will be cutting out the shapes.
After the shapes are colored, have students cut out all the shapes. This may be a challenge for students who have trouble using scissors. If so, please feel free to assist them.
You can choose to use googly eyes if you don’t want to use the white circles for eyes. If you do use the white circles, you can draw a pupil with a black colored pencil.
Now it’s time to create the shape scarecrow!
Arrange the pieces to look like a scarecrow and glue them onto the first page.
Here’s what each shape is for:
- triangles – hat and nose
- rectangle – body, arms, legs, hair
- circles – face, eyes, and hands
Make sure to draw a smile on his face using a writing utensil!
Then have your child write how many circles, rectangles, and triangles are on the shape scarecrow.
Learning Components
This activity is great for talking about 2D shapes! Recognizing and differentiating between shapes like circles, squares, and triangles lays the groundwork for learning about 3D shapes, spatial reasoning, and eventually, more advanced topics in geometry.
Understanding 2D shapes helps children make sense of the world around them. They begin to recognize shapes in everyday objects, from road signs to patterns in nature, which reinforces the relevance of what they’re learning in the classroom.
After creating your shape scarecrow, you can have a discussion about the shapes around the room that they see!
