Peppermint Cocoa Cloud Dough

by Angela Thayer 4 Comments

Cloud dough is my go-to activity. It’s so easy and my kids can play with it for long chunks at a time. To make things a little bit different, we changed up the regular cloud dough recipe. We added in cocoa and peppermint extract into the recipe! It was fun and smelled great!

Peppermint Cocoa Cloud Dough

Here’s what you need for this activity:

  • 5 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup of oil (I used baby oil, but vegetable oil works great!)
  • 1/2 to 1 cup of cocoa
  • peppermint extract or peppermint essential oils
  • large container

To make the cloud dough, just mix the flour and oil together with your hands. Then sprinkle in the cocoa and continue mixing with your hands. I used roughly 1 cup of cocoa, but you can use more or less if you’d like. Lastly, squirt in drops of peppermint extract or oil. Add in as much peppermint as you’d prefer.

I love how cloud dough feels! It’s soft, silky, and yet it’s moldable.

My kids seriously can play with this for hours. They play better with cloud dough than they do with their toys! They’ll bury items, make balls, drive vehicles on it, scoop it up, make designs with cookie cutters, and much more.

Wesley really enjoyed smoothing the cloud dough down with a roller. Then he made a track for his cars to race on!

Cloud dough feels so nice, that even his toes wanted to touch it!

We typically don’t wear much clothing with cloud dough because it’s messy! I also recommend playing with cloud dough on non-carpeted floors.

When we’re done playing, I store this container on a high shelf. We made this about two months ago and it is still good. I don’t even cover it, but I know some people recommend covering it.

Have fun trying this recipe out! This was day 5 of the 31 Days of Play series. To see all the activities, visit here.

This sounds like loads of fun. Would this be safe for a 1 year old?

Yes it is safe. I would use vegetable oil in case they try to put it in their mouth. 🙂 However, if your child likes to put things in their mouth a lot, I would hold off until they are a little older.
