Chocolate Oobleck

by Angela Thayer Leave a Comment

Do you know what oobleck is? It’s material that’s a cross between a liquid and a solid. You can dip your hand into it, like a liquid, or you can squeeze it, like a solid! We’ve made some traditional oobleck to go along with a Dr. Seuss book, but today I’m sharing how we made chocolate oobleck!

Chocolate Oobleck

Here’s what you need:

  • 1/2 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 & 1/2 cups of corn starch
  • 1 cup & 1 tablespoon of water (approximately)

To make this, mix 1/2 cup of cocoa powder with 1.5 cups of  corn starch in a bowl. Then slowly pour in the water while you mix with a spoon. If the mixture is too watery, add in some more corn starch. If it is too dry, add in some water.

It’s so fun to play with! It’s a messy play activity, so some oobleck will stick on your fingers. We kept a bucket of warm water to dip our hands in when we wanted to clean our hands off.

Like I said earlier, oobleck is a mix between a liquid and a solid. It “moves” on the table when you let it just sit there. When you pick it up, it feels like a solid. But when you let it just sit in your hands, it runs down your fingers.

See how fun it is to play with! It is a messy play activity, so be prepared to wash hands and the table afterwards! But we love messy play at our house 🙂

Playing with chocolate oobleck

Since my middle son’s favorite color is green (seriously…everything HAS to be green!), we made green oobleck, too! He couldn’t wait to dip his hands into the goo!

Chocolate oobleck is also gluten free. Hope you’ll try out this fantastic messy play activity!
