Alphabet Sequencing Activity with Leaves
Fall is here, which means it’s time for all the fall activities!
If you teach the alphabet, you need to try this alphabet sequencing activity with leaves! This easy activity is FUN and effective for teaching the ABCs!
Alphabet Order Importance
In preschool and kindergarten, students are introduced to the alphabet. After learning the letter names, they may start to develop awareness that letters are organized in a specific sequence.
Learning the alphabet order is a gradual process that begins in early childhood and is reinforced through various activities as children progress through the early elementary grades. By first grade, most students are expected to have a solid understanding of alphabet order.
This alphabet sequencing activity I’m sharing today uses leaves with letters, which is perfect to do during the autumn months!
Materials Needed
- card stock paper
- laminator (optional)
- scissors
Setting Up the Activity
- Print the pages onto card stock paper.
- I recommend laminating the pages, since it will make the cards more durable.
- Cut out the cards.
- Separate the cards into 2 piles: cards with 2 letters and cards with 1 letter.
Doing the Activity
Give the student a 2 letter card.
Have them find the card that has the next alphabet letter in the sequence.
For example, if you had a card that had “p, q” on it, you would look for the card with “r” on it. Match the cards together and then repeat for the rest of the cards.
At the end, put try putting all the cards together!
Ideas for Using this Activity
- Try this activity as a whole group first. Demonstrate how to do the activity so the directions are clear to students.
- Pair up students and give them a set of alphabet leaves. Have them either take turns or work together to complete the sequences.
- Add this activity to an alphabet center for students to complete independently.
- Send the activity home to practice with caregivers or family members.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this set of printables is only for lowercase letters.
If this is too hard, I would work with just 2 sets of cards. Give them four cards (2 of each kind) and have them master those first. Then add more cards to the activity.
