Surprise Color Eruptions

by Angela Thayer 1 Comment

We love all things bubbly and fizzy. We just did a fizzy hearts activity last week, but we had to try another fizzy activity. This one had a twist though. The colors in the cup were a surprise and didn’t show up until it started bubbling up. So much fun!

Surprise Color Eruptions

Here’s what you need:

  • baking soda
  • colored craft sand
  • vinegar
  • styrofoam cups
  • large tub

To set up, place 1-2 tablespoons in a cup that is not clear. I used a styrofoam cup, but you can use whatever you have. Since this is a surprise activity, you’ll want something that covers the colored sand.

Then put 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda on top of the sand. After you have all your cups ready, set them in a large container.

Then invite your child to play. I explained to my boys that there were colors that would appear when they poured vinegar in the cups. They were so excited to get started!

beginning

My oldest boy squirted vinegar in almost all the cups as quickly as he could so he could see the colors. Poor Wes only got one cup.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking…

They kept squirting until they bubbled over. I loved seeing the vibrant colors!

The boys enjoyed pouring colors together and eventually pouring it all in the tub.

This was a quick, yet super fun activity! We’ll be doing it again soon!
